In the world of design, there are always people driven by freedom and innovation. They call themselves “MO Commune” and set out to explore the boundaries and deeper spirit of design. For them, design isn’t just about solving problems — it’s a bridge that connects nature, architecture, space, and human emotions.

BRING DESIGN BACK TO FREEDOM
Talking about the original idea of founding “MO Commune,” Mr. Hu said: “It’s actually quite simple. At first, we just wanted a space where we could express ourselves more freely. For a designer, the most valuable thing is having freedom in a project. That’s both an ideal and a challenge. Design is all about finding and solving problems, and we want to keep the spirit of exploration alive in that process.

“MO” reflects their view on certainty and uncertainty.
In Chinese, “Mou” can mean something specific, but it can also be vague and undefined. Design is the same — it has to meet clear functions and realities, yet still leave room for openness and possibility.
As for “Commune,” it stands for the way they want to work: a small community, a team that shares the same values and craftsmanship spirit, coming together to create something meaningful.

BLENDING NATURE AND HUMANITY
As a designer, Mr. Hu has also been influenced by the masters. He shared that during his student years, from books to real-life encounters, the ideas of architects like Le Corbusier had a big impact on him. In particular, Le Corbusier’s small house built in his later years inspired MO Commune’s early projects — small in scale, yet refined, restrained, and full of meaning.

In practice, they stick to one principle: design must respond to its environment and the people in it. For example, in an urban renewal project in Kunming, the team worked with a five-story street-side building, each floor only about 80 square meters. It had to hold both books and lifestyle products.
The client’s request was clear — “Don’t make it a cold commercial space, let the bookstore and life truly blend together.”

In the end, MO Commune carefully refined circulation, density, and function, turning a small space into a place full of life. What’s more, Kunming’s unique climate allowed them to experiment with a fully open design — no air conditioning, no heating, just natural ventilation and open windows. The building becomes part of the city, achieving low energy use and an almost “carbon-neutral” state.

RESPECTING MATERIALS, LETTING TIME LEAVE ITS MARK
When it comes to materials, MO Commune has clear preferences: they love natural, warm, and time-worn textures. Wood, stone, concrete, even metals that oxidize or rust — these materials change over time, and it’s precisely this transformation that the designers appreciate.

No material is perfect. It may darken or warp with wind and rain, or rust and oxidize. But that’s its life. Like a flower blooming and wilting, we learn to appreciate its beauty while accepting its fragility.

Of course, this choice comes with challenges. MO Commune not only has to anticipate potential issues during design and construction, but also communicate in advance with clients about the inevitable changes. For them, design isn’t just about using materials — it’s about embracing their past, present, and future.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Mr. Hu believes that contemporary architects shouldn’t just “build houses.” They should also focus on community building, cultural preservation, environmental restoration, and resource management. In practice, MO Commune tries to ease the burden on the environment through sustainable design.

For example, in their Kunming project, they made extensive use of recycled steel panels from a vacated building. “What others see as waste, we see as waiting to be given a new language and life.” This approach turns design from material consumption into a process of regeneration.

At MO Commune, design isn’t about a single answer. It’s a balance of freedom and structure, certainty and uncertainty, and a dialogue between nature, culture, and space. True design value lies in coexisting with the environment, connecting with society, and touching people’s hearts.
